These cool words have the letter “r” in them and totally change the way they sound. They’re called “r-controlled vowel words” or the Bossy R words! They’re pretty awesome.

Now, you might be thinking, “What’s a Bossy R word? Is it a word that tells people what to do?” Well, sort of! Bossy R words are actually words that have the letter “r” in them, and they can change the sound of other letters when they’re paired together.

So, basically, an r-controlled vowel word is a word where the “r” takes control and changes the sound of the vowel that comes before it. For example, the word “car” has an “a” sound like “cat” but when you add the “r,” it becomes “carrr” and the “a” sound changes to an “ar” sound. Pretty cool, right?

Let’s take a look at some examples, shall we?
Firstup the example is the word “bird.” When you say it, the “i” makes a short “ih” sound. But when you add a Bossy R to the end of it, like “birrrd,” the “i” sound changes to a long “ur” sound.

There are so many Bossy R words out there, and they can be a lot of fun to say! Some other examples include “star,” “fork,” “cart,” and “fern.”

So, why are these words important to know? Well, for one thing, they can help you become a better reader and speller. If you know that adding a Bossy R to a word can change the sound of another letter, it can help you figure out how to spell other words too.
